Safety and Experience Come First When Looking for an Asbestos Removal Company in Sydney

Finding out that a structure or building you own in Hornsby, Penrith, Blacktown or Ryde contains asbestos is enough of a nightmare on its own. Don’t compound the problem by choosing an unqualified company to perform the removal chores. You could be in for an even bigger headache.

Asbestos removal is a serious and potentially hazardous undertaking. You want to take your time and ensure that you have chosen the right company to do the job. By simply performing some due diligence and research you can mitigate any problems before they occur.

Giving the Right Answers Regarding Asbestos is Not Enough

Unfortunately, there are some contractors who, though licensed, are unqualified to do every type of asbestos removal job. It’s your job to ensure that you choose the right contractor for the job.

Remember, contractors are in competition with one another. They are always on the lookout for the next job and sometimes they will claim to have qualifications they simply don’t have.

Understanding the Difference in Asbestos Licences

There are two types of asbestos removal contractor licenses in NSW. Class A is the best licence to look for, as it permits the contractor to remove ‘friable’ asbestos.

Friable means the asbestos is easily crumbled. This is the type of asbestos found in loose fill roofing insulation. Because it’s easily crumbled it gives off more of the tiny fibres and is the most dangerous type to inhale.

The Class B license, which allows for the removal of bonded asbestos only, is more common.

Contractors who have Class A licences are generally more knowledgeable and experienced as they deal with both kinds of asbestos.

However, if you are having less than ten square metres of Asbestos removed, technically you don’t need a licence at all. This results in the problem of a contractor showing up to give you a quote on your job, seeing that the asbestos is less than ten square metres and claiming they are qualified to do the job.

They may be qualified under the letter of the law, but that doesn’t mean they have the experience or knowledge to properly remove the asbestos.

Do Your Homework Before Choosing a Contractor

Be pragmatic and sensible before you choose an asbestos removal contractor. Have the candidates supply references and check them out fully. Ask around at construction supply stores and building sites.

Above all make sure they are licenced, insured and experienced in performing the work you are hiring them to do. The health and safety of your family and guests can rely on how you go about choosing your asbestos removal contractor.
